Makanau is a table top mountain between Naalehu and Pahala on the Big Island. It is a sacred place to the Hawaiians, with an ancient He’eiau on its plateau. I wanted to paint this mountain for years before I did it, I needed to make sure I could do it justice.

Pele

Pele, the goddess of the Volcano, rises from the flames to stare back at the viewer. Pele has appeared to people in the smoke of the volcano, as a beautiful woman with flowing black hair in a white dress, as well as an old woman with a dog.
Pele’s Flowers

This flower can be found growing along the road in Volcano National Park. Due to the colors and the profusion of the blossoms, I call it Pele’s flowers. It is technically called Crocosmia.
